Marcela Diaz

Marcela Diaz is an Award Winning American/Peruvian choreographer who founded Afro conTempo, the first dance company in the United States to combine Afro-Peruvian folklore with Contemporary Dance.

Marcela holds a Bachelor of Arts in African and Contemporary Dance Studies from Florida International University. Marcela’s research and technique studies include work with Peru Negro, Fabiola de la Cuba, Oscar Villanueva, and Lalo Izquierdo.

In 2009, Marcela choreographed for the National Ballet of Trujillo and Show Muchik in the Ruins of Chan Chan, In 2010, Marcela received the Peruvian Pride Award and was Awarded Queen in the National Marinera Limena Contest.

Marcela Diaz’s fusion technique has been taught at the National School of Folklore Jose Maria Arguedas, New World School of the Arts, the Vania Masias Academy, and Miami Dade College.

In 2011, Marcela directed ALMA EN BOCA, a production which included Grammy Nominated singer Eva Ayllon. Afro conTempo then left for their Peru Tour in 2012.

Marcela lead an Afro-Peruvian carnival dance workshop at Miami Bridge Homestead in 2011.
